Google said that its Insights for Search tool was more flexible and functional than Google Trends and would give more in-depth analysis into what people were searching for on the web.

Insights for Search supports searches for trends over time, by region, category and top and rising related terms.

Yossi Matias, director of Google Tel Aviv R&D centre, where Insights for Search and Trends were both developed, said: "It gives some powerful new tools for looking at web trends. It has some cool features such as a world heat map to graphically display search volume and regional interest."

However, some industry search specialists were left underwhelmed by Google's new enterprise search tool.

Chris Bartlett, technical director for Exalead, which itself markets a specialist enterprise search product, said: "It's interesting because we are looking at the fact that they have upgraded the device to provide 10 million documents instead of three. But we already provide 20 million documents. "

Exalead entered the UK market 18 months ago and has around 200 customers, including HMRC, Rightmove and the Scottish government. The company said that it was growing at around 300% a year, and was looking to gain up to 400 more customers over the next 18 months.
