A film in the new HD-DVD
format has found its way on to a pirate file-sharing website for the first time.
The film,
Serenity,
is one of several available on the new discs, which give a much higher picture
and sound quality than conventional DVDs. This is the first time a HD-DVD film
has been made available for illegal sharing, as the format is supposed to be
more secure and harder to crack than a normal DVD.
However, programmers last month announced that they had been able to break
the secure encryption on the new discs, although the process of copying such a
disc is still complicated, requiring further programming knowhow.
The copied file is
available
on a Bittorrent website, the
technology
website Arstechnica reports, which allows users to download copies of the
film from other users who already have complete copies. It will require a hefty
broadband connection, however, as the file comes in at nearly 20GB, the size of
four normal DVDs.
HD-DVD is competing with the similar rival format
Blu-ray
for sales of high-definition film and television discs.
