Complaints about companies operating premium rate phone scams have fallen, but people still need to be vigilant said ICSTIS , as it launched new guidance in a leaflet.

The premium rate watchdog said although the situation was improving, problems such as mobile phone scams are still common, with far too many people falling for them.

It wants to "hammer home the message" that people need to check the small print before getting into any kind of contract, and its leaflet, entitled "Are you protected against premium rate scams?" has seven tips.

These include showing how to instantly spot a premium rate service phone number – most of which are four or five digit 'short code' numbers or numbers beginning with 09.

The watchdog said people should always read the terms and conditions in any contract before agreeing to any service and to be wary of 'free' offers or fabulous prizes.

ICSTIS point out that legitimate companies don't promote their services or products by spam. People should also keep an eye on their phone bill and share any hints and tips with friends and family.

The leaflet will be distributed to libraries, doctor's surgeries, Citizens' Advice Bureaux, Trading Standards offices, at academic institutions, and other public places. It can also be ordered by emailing christinem@icstis.org.uk
