PC help: Write discs for a DVD player

Q I downloaded the Final Burner program and created a DVD-RW disc that works perfectly in the computer. My problem starts when I try to play it on my DVD player. The disc is read, but I am unable to open the file to run the DVD.

A There are two potential problems here. Writable and rewritable DVDs do not always work with players other than computers. Optical drives work by shining a laser beam at the disc and recording whether the beam is reflected or not. Ordinary discs are very shiny and reflect a lot of the laser beam, but the dyes used in writable discs do not reflect as much.

Computer drives are designed to be more sensitive than those found in DVD players. Blank DVDs and CDs are better reflectors than their rewritable counterparts, so these are a better choice when creating discs for use in other players.

Make sure a blank DVD disc is in the DVD writer drive before beginning. Start Final Burner and click on VideoDVD in the Select project type window. Click on OK. Assuming the video file has already been edited with another program, select Make DVD from AVI and then click on Next.

Find the video file in the Browse window and double click on it. Click on the Add file(s) button to include more videos on the disc and use the green arrow buttons to change the order. Click on the Next button to convert the video, when you are satisfied with the selections.

Depending on the length of the clips and the speed of the computer this could take some time. Check the Drive option is set to the correct drive. Click on the Burn button to write the video to the DVD disc.
